Those working in CSA Prevention repeatedly hear the following myths.
Only paedophiles sexually abuse children – in reality a lot of abuse is opportunistic perpetrated by those not normally sexually attracted to children
Paedophiles are easy to detect – in fact, they can be anybody, but most are men (between 1-4%). Paedophiles are often hidden in plain sight and may operate for decades before being apprehended.
Child sex offenders are mainly strangers – in fact, most are known to their victims
Child sex offenders are ‘lone wolves’– in fact there is a growing body of evidence that paedophiles actively affiliate as it increases their access to victims
People who abuse their own children are not a danger to other children – not true
Parents are to blame when their child is abused– in reality, parents are often blindsided by abusers
CSA cannot be prevented – in reality, where grooming is detected, adults can intervene to prevent abuse
Only children from poorer backgrounds are abused – in fact, victims come from any socioeconomic group
The accounts of children are unreliable – in reality, it is extremely rare for children to make up abuse
Children invite their abuse – this is called adultification. Children cannot consent to sexual activities
CSA is accepted in some cultures – in reality, abuse is universally considered reprehensible and abhorrent
