The short answer is that whistleblowers rankle because they reveal the moral cowardice of institutional leaders. In speaking the truth they delegitimise the leadership of those who have presided over institutional cultures which enable paedophiles and promote leaders wilfully blind to the suffering of children.

The aphorism is that the “truth will set you free” but when it comes to paedophiles, the truth may well see people in prison.
